Arkansas & Oklahoma IAFP Joint Conference - FSMA Presentations Overview

 

Dear Food Safety Professional,

The Arkansas and Oklahoma IAFP chapters are excited to announce that during the joint 2017 conference we will have sessions and speakers to cover the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).  The Oklahoma IAFP chapter will join the Arkansas IAFP Chapter for a joint Conference Sept 19-21 in Springdale, Arkansas.  Speakers will come from backgrounds at the Grocery Manufacturer’s Association, Regulatory, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Dole Foods, Food Industry Counsel LLC, Transplace, Arc Best, Lifeline Foods, and Oklahoma State University.

Craig Henry will provide insight into FSMA now that it has been in the implementation phase long enough to expose strengths and weaknesses.  

Bio
Craig Henry, Ph.D. served 3.5 years in Deloitte & Touche’s Food & Product safety practice as a director in the advisory practice.  Prior to joining Deloitte in 2010 Dr. Henry served as Senior Vice President in the Scientific and Regulatory Affairs department of the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and as the Executive Director of the GMA Science and Education Foundation. Dr. Henry enjoyed 8.5 years of service at GMA and the National Food Processors Association.

The Food and Agriculture Sector is almost entirely under private ownership and is composed of an estimated 2.1 million farms, 935,000 restaurants, and more than 200,000 registered food manufacturing, processing, and storage facilities. This sector accounts for roughly one-fifth of the nation's economic activity.  The Food and Agriculture Sector has critical dependencies with many sectors, but particularly with the following:

  • Water and Wastewater Systems, for clean irrigation and processed water
  • Transportation Systems, for movement of products and livestock
  • Energy, to power the equipment needed for agriculture production and food processing
  • Chemical, for fertilizers and pesticides used in the production of crops

A former AAFP member comes home! Natalie Dyenson is currently the Vice President, Food Safety & Quality at Dole Food Company, Inc  and previously served as senior director of International food safety for Wal-Mart. Prior to Wal-Mart she served as the Manager of Food Safety & Health at Walt Disney World.

Bio
Ms. Johnston is chief in-house counsel at Transplace, a third party logistics and technology company. A respected and accomplished transportation attorney with over 25 years of international business, supply chain, transportation and regulatory experience, Ms. Johnston is a subject matter expert in transportation law and risk and is a member of a number of well-respected legal organizations. Her forte is balancing customer needs and wants against measured risk and operational viability in order to achieve contracts considered by both parties to be Win-Win.

Fourteen years ago, Ms. Johnston joined Transplace and is currently its Vice President of Legal & Risk. She oversees all legal and risk matters for the Transplace family of companies. She is a member of the Arkansas Bar, the Conference of Freight Counsel, the Transportation Loss Prevention & Security Association, and the Transportation Lawyers’ Association for which she has served on its Executive Committee.

Ms. Johnston was immersed in the food sector as an International Key Account Executive for Tyson Foods, managing Tyson’s export and overseas product management to several of Tyson’s global retail, club and food service customers.

Ravi Jadeja -OK Chapter leadership and faculty at Oklahoma State University

Ravi Jadeja serves as an Assistant Professor and Food Safety Specialist at Oklahoma State University in the Department of Animal Science. During the past several years, Jadeja focused his attention on the development of strategies to control foodborne pathogens and to improve the safety and quality of a variety of food products at pre- and post-harvest levels.  His principle responsibilities include teaching and outreach programs in Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points, food safety, food security and Global Food Safety Initiative platforms.                                                                     
 
Ruben Bulgin of Lifeline Foods -Food Defense and Security Manager

Bio
Ruben Bulgin manages the Food Defense Program and Security at Lifeline Foods. It entails a base-wide physical security program, including patrolling, surveying, and inspecting 38 controlled/restricted acres such as sensitive food production complex, ethanol production plant, research and development site for a facility comprising 250 plus personnel.   LifeLine is a farmer owned dry corn mill producing high quality corn ingredients.

Ruben is a Senior Security Specialist with over 15 years of experience and a background and expertise in site security, emergency management, physical security, and executive protection. Mission-driven senior security professional and a veteran in the field of physical security with a bachelors degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice.
