The world is facing an unprecedented challenge with the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. First and foremost, COVID-19 is a risk for public health generally and we can only hope that the vaccines now available to us with offer some respite. From the food industries perspective, while there is no definitive evidence that SARS-CoV-2 virus can be transmitted on food or its packaging, i.e. it is not a food borne illness, the occupational safety risk for workers is high and this may indirectly affect food safety through adversely affecting hygienic food processing and food formulation. Incomplete science and misinformed opinion has driven inappropriate perceptions, and this in turn threatens to disrupt domestic and global trade.
